A short history of Swiss watchmaking
Watchmaking took off in Geneva in the 16th century, when religious reforms discouraged jewellery and goldsmiths turned to making watches. The craft then spread through the Jura mountains, where families assembled parts during the long winters. By the 19th century Swiss workshops were famous for precision and for complicated mechanisms such as chronographs and moon phases.
In the 1970s cheap quartz watches from Japan nearly destroyed the Swiss industry. The Swatch, launched in 1983, helped it recover by making Swiss watches affordable and fashionable again.
Mechanical versus quartz
A mechanical watch is powered by a spring, wound by hand or by the movement of your wrist. A quartz watch uses a battery and a vibrating quartz crystal, which makes it more accurate and cheaper. Most luxury brands still focus on mechanical watches because of the craft involved.
| Type | Power | Accuracy | Typical brands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | Spring | Good | Rolex, Patek Philippe, Omega |
| Quartz | Battery | Very high | Casio, Citizen, Seiko |
| Smartwatch | Rechargeable battery | Very high | Tech brands |

Omega’s Speedmaster was worn by astronauts on the Moon in 1969. Rolex’s Oyster, launched in 1926, was one of the first waterproof wristwatches. Casio’s G-Shock became famous for surviving drops and knocks.
