Which countries have green in their flag? The full list

Quick answer: 94 of the national flags in the Trivillion flags quiz include green. In 78 it is a main colour, from mostly green flags like Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to tricolours like Italy, Ireland and Nigeria. In 16 more it appears in a smaller detail, such as Lebanon’s cedar or Morocco’s star.

How we counted

We measured the colours of every flag image in our flags quiz. A flag counts as having green as a main colour when green covers a large part of it, such as a stripe, a field or a triangle. Smaller details, like a green star or a wreath in a coat of arms, are listed separately.

What green means on flags

Green has a few common meanings. In the Muslim world it is closely linked to Islam, which is why it dominates the flags of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Mauritania and others. As one of the Pan-Arab colours, green appears on the flags of Palestine, Jordan, the UAE, Kuwait and Sudan, and as one of the Pan-African colours it appears on the flags of Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon, Mali and many more.

Green also often stands for land, forests and farming, as on the flags of Brazil, Nigeria and Zambia, and for hope or youth. Ireland’s green represents its Gaelic tradition.

The greenest flags

Some flags are mostly green. Saudi Arabia’s flag is almost entirely green apart from the white shahada and sword. Turkmenistan’s flag is green with a red carpet band, and Bangladesh’s is green with a red disc. From 1977 to 2011, Libya used a flag that was plain green, the only single-colour national flag in modern times.

Green look-alikes

Several green flags are easy to confuse. Italy and Mexico share green, white and red, but Mexico has its eagle emblem. Ireland and Ivory Coast use green, white and orange in opposite order: Ireland has green at the hoist. Mali, Guinea and Senegal all use green, yellow and red; Mali starts with green, Guinea starts with red and Senegal has a green star.
